Scope

Blavity was founded 4 years ago as a single platform to unite and elevate the voices of black millennials. Since then, the company grew to be home to the largest network of digital brands that serves multicultural communities, commanding a reach of ~30 million people each month. With 5 brands (Blavity, 21Ninety, AfroTech, Shadow and Act, & Travel Noire), the challenge was to shift Blavity’s brand narrative from a single idea to an umbrella entity— one that pays homage to their roots while painting a bold picture for the company’s bright future.

The Concept

Where Corporate Meets Character | Traditionally corporate brand identities are conservative and sterile. Color palettes tend to stay within the blue, yellow and green family. We chose to re-imagine corporate through the lens of vibrant, expressive black culture across the African Diaspora. We drew inspiration from the contemporary Black Dandy aesthetic as well as other West African fashions. We also integrated the right balance of abstract, avant-grade and realism to steer Blavity, Inc.’s identity to be more abstracted and aspirational.

Mixed media artists like Willian Santiago and Neil Krug were muses to our bold and textured graphic elements. We sought to layer stylized portraits of beautiful people with vivid colors and high contrast. Furthermore we focused the brand voice to be direct yet approachable, positioning it as authoritative while encouraging transparency.


Logo

After selecting a font palette, we created a new logo using our primary typeface TT Norm. We took design cues from the original Blavity logo design while adding custom elements. The name “Blavity” is a very strong and iconic name, and we chose a heavier weight sans serif font that felt balanced yet had some character.

Typhography

To round out the palette we paired TT Norm with Miller Display. This serif font adds a bit more refinement and allows for added versatility and special emphasis in typographical designs, particularly for editorial and content systems.


Color

For the color system, we evolved the traditional corporate palette to be more vibrant and expressive. We also chose colors that complimented a range of skin tones as we looked to paired them with portrait photography of people from a diverse set of backgrounds.

The goals were to (1) reduce friction for learning brand history; (2) drive business development and advertising partnerships; (3) showcase the company’s best work as a partner; (4) and attract best in class talent that aligned with Blavity’s workplace and culture.
